Job Description

Sotera Defense Solutions is seeking top talent as a Senior Research Scientist supporting the Naval Research Laboratory – Optical Sciences Division in Washington, DC. Qualified candidates must hold or be able to obtain a Secret level Clearance.  

The Optical Sciences Division at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has an immediate, full-time opening for an outstanding Senior Research Scientist with exceptional drive and creativity to develop next generation optical sensing and imaging systems. This individual must be able to work independently as well as in a team and have strong problem solving skills. NRL offers a creative, fast-paced research environment with state-of-the-art equipment dedicated to developing future optics and photonics technologies.

Responsibilities

  • The candidate should be able to contribute in the near term to existing projects relating to the development of coherent sensing and imaging systems under development at NRL. Specifically, the candidate will be expected to independently design, perform, and analyze optical experiments related to the optimization and characterization of the systems under development at NRL.
  • The candidate will be expected to present research to funding agencies as well as to the scientific community in the form of journal publications and conference presentations.
  • The candidate will also have the opportunity to develop independent research projects in the future, compete for internal and external funding, and assist in guiding the direction of the research team.

Qualified candidates must hold or be able to obtain a Secret level Clearance.  

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements: 

  • PhD in Physics, Electrical, or Optical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of five years of relevant hands-on laboratory experience
  • Strong publication record

Preferred Requirements

Experience working with digital holography, computational imaging, non-linear optics, laser development or coherent detection systems would be particularly beneficial.

Qualified candidates must hold or be able to obtain a Secret level Clearance.
