Group 81—Chemical, Microsystem, and Nanoscale Technologies

The Chemical, Microsystem, and Nanoscale Technologies Group combines chemistry, optics, photonics, microfluidics, and nanofabrication disciplines, enabling the development of new technologies in the areas of chemical-biological defense, diagnostic and forensic analysis, and sensors and signal processors. The work includes the design, development, and testing of chemical sensors for trace explosive and toxic chemical detection (both point and standoff); multifunctional microsystems combining sensing, actuation, and energy sources; and the design, fabrication, and demonstration of metamaterials, plasmonic and nanophotonic devices, and microfluidic components.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: A microfabrication researcher is sought to work on the fabrication of novel fiber devices and fabric systems. The researcher will develop processes to fabricate fiber preforms, draw the preforms into fibers, and integrate the fibers into advanced fabric sensor systems, including wovens, knits, and composites. The work will include development of new fabrication processes, from thin film deposition to preform assembly, to fiber drawing to textile integration. Novel results will be considered for publication in scientific journals, as appropriate. Additional tasks will include metrology and process analysis.

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS: BS degree in Materials Science, Physics, Engineering, or equivalent and at least 2 years of relevant work experience. The candidate should have at least 2 years of experience in fabrication process development, but not necessarily in fibers. Working with clean room processes in an industrial or academic setting is highly desired. Experience with textile manufacturing and with fabrication of composites is advantageous. The ability to demonstrate effective laboratory, analytical skills, presentation skills, and the ability to work both individually and as part of a team are highly desirable. Previous authorship or co-authorship of publications is desirable.
