Reporting to the Animal Facilities Operations Manager, the Animal Caretaker in the Advance Science Research Center (ASRC) Vivarium will perform animal husbandry and sanitation as prescribed by the ASRC and federal and state laws and regulations. In addition, the Animal Caretaker may provide assistance with research-related activities (e.g. data collection and various experimental procedures such as the administration of injections, specimen collection, and animal observation as prescribed by research protocols).
The Animal Caretaker is responsible for maintaining the animal facility according to standard facility operating procedures and in general will routinely perform the following duties:
- Reports any issues related to animal husbandry, facilities, or veterinary health issues to supervisor.
- Monitors and observes animal behavior, maintaining accurate and detailed records regarding the identity, health and habits of various animal species.
- Assists with animal husbandry to include the changing cages, feeding/watering animals using specialized techniques and equipment, and developing skills necessary to safely and humanely handle various animal species.
- Assesses conditions of caging/equipment and makes recommendations for equipment repair or replacement.
- Ensures preparation and proper sanitation of equipment.
- Provides research assistance to the research staff and general technical assistance to other animal care staff, which may include the collection of biological samples for diagnostic testing and research purposes.
- Maintains and records the distribution of specialized animal diets and log environments following prescribed SOPs.
- Assists in the research of, and the record keeping for, breeding colonies.
- Follows all animal health and safety protocols.
- Participates in on-the-job training required to develop new skills, learn new techniques, and implement new policies.
- Provides adequate quantities of clean feed and water to all animals on a daily basis.
- Prepares cages and provides sufficient quantities of clean and bedded cages as well as other supplies and materials to animal holding rooms.
- Demonstrates and develops knowledge and ability to independently operate any and all cage wash and sanitization equipment and troubleshoot problems related to the equipment.
- Tracks and maintains adequate supplies and inventory to support daily activities throughout facilities. Provides Supervisor, Animal Research Facility with routine supply/equipment orders (i.e. feed and bedding, disposable supplies, equipment repairs and service).
- Maintains animal rooms in clean and odorless condition and maintains room census.
- Weighs or restrains animals when required for various technical procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Work assignments may include weekends and holidays.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience relevant to the research being performed.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
- AALAS certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) preferred.
- Prior experience in the caring and handling of animals desired.
COMPENSATION
Commensurate with experience.
