Research Associate positions in Compound Semiconductor Photonics Technology

Cardiff School of Physics and Astronomy, Cardiff School of Engineering, Institute for Compound Semiconductors

As part of the initial phase of a major investment programme, Cardiff University seeks to appoint several new research associates in the general area of compound semiconductors including materials, devices, and technology in the THz region. Relevant materials include III-As, Sb, N in topical areas of photonics, optoelectronics, quantum technologies, metamaterials, co-integration.  These new positions support a larger effort forming the Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS) at Cardiff University. The ICS forms part of Cardiff University’s £300m investment in new research and innovation centres, and its potential is already recognised by the Welsh and UK governments, who have invested over £29m towards its creation.  The ICS will be a unique facility in Europe, based in a new building, and equipped with state-of-the art fabrication and characterisation facilities including a full 8” fabrication line as well as a related small area process capability, epitaxy, material and device characterisation. It will enable novel research and development along with strong engagement with industry.  This will position Cardiff to become the UK and European leader in translational research in Compound Semiconductors.

Candidates will have a PhD in Engineering, Physics or closely-related subject. You will be internationally recognised with a growing track record in the field of compound semiconductor materials, technology, or devices, with a strong research record demonstrated through publications in high quality academic journals and/or strong industrial experience; you will have experience in producing research income and of research/industry-based group participation; and you will have proven ability to network effectively with academics and outside academia.
