Job Description:
FUNCTIONS / DUTIES :
Serve as a first line discipline supervisor for the Photonics Group of optical engineers in support of the STS and TS business areas, developing their skills and promoting career growth.
An individual at this level should be demonstrating the leadership ability (Engineering Planning & Project Launch, Driving Technical Performance, and Risk & Opportunity Management) to understand and oversee the relevant product technologies of the business area programs.
Understands the Hardware Engineering Process and acts as the HW process application expert relevant to their specialty providing the appropriate instantiation of process for the programs under your purview.
Work and partner with the Product Realization Group (PRG) Leads on business strategies as well as program execution strategies. Foster strong working relationships, including handling of issues and interfacing with PRG leads, the Optical Engineering Manager, the Optical Engineering Leadership Team (OELT), vendors and subcontractors.
Partner closely with other department section leads within STS, TS and Optical Engineering (and further as applicable) to ensure staffing and program coordination across the organization. Strengthen the relationships within STS to result in a strong, cohesive, multi-locational STS organization.
Perform as Independent Assessor during IDR’s, Peer Reviews and Failure Review Board meetings.
Perform project development work on contracted programs, as required.
Participates in the hiring process and is responsible for developing, mentoring, counseling and evaluation performance of subordinates.
Will be involved in program proposal development relevant to the product and OE roadmaps.
Work and partner with the Product Realization Group Leads on business strategies as well as program execution strategies.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
SUPERVISION:
Responsibilities for the work product of those under your purview, assuring they are applying sound HW processes.
Provide expense and capital item inputs for department budget. Provide input to proposal cost estimates. Must track and meet utilization targets for your HW team.
Responsible for personnel management (PDR Assessments, Promotion Planning, HR issues, etc.)
Responsible for Career Development Plans of your employees, and providing the tools required for them to perform their tasks.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Within Company: Ability to work and integrate with PRG’s business areas. Likewise, ability to work with peers within HW discipline and cross-disciplines.
Outside of Company: Some contact with customers, contractors and government officials. May act as supplier technical point of contact for hardware item development.
Required Skills and Education:
Bachelors Degree Optical Engineering or Equivalent with optical hardware development related experience.
Minimum 2 years previous engineering management and project leadership experience.
Motivated self-starter with leadership skills and ability to effectively engage and motivate a team.
Excellent problem solving skills, judgment, and analytical capability.
Strong written and oral presentation skills.
Preferred Skills and Education:
Strong understanding of the development and application of lasers and laser systems.
Hands-on hardware build, test and integration experience.
