The City University of New York’s newest facility, the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) builds on the success of the University’s rich past with the goal of becoming a leader in visionary scientific research in the future. Focusing on the fields of Structural Biology, Nanotechnology, Photonics, Neuroscience, and Environmental Sciences, the ASRC will operate as a nucleus of a University-wide science enterprise, fostering the development of an integrated research network that brings together faculty, students, and post-doctoral fellows from CUNY’s colleges across the five boroughs. This state-of-the-art, world-class facility will house a staff of elite scientists and leaders who will seek to break down the walls between disparate but increasingly interrelated disciplines of applied science. The CUNY ASRC’s Environmental Science Initiative seeks applications from individuals with field experience in botany, ornithology, entomology, ecology, and soil science to serve as a Part-Time Project Assistant. This position is funded from June 2017 to August 2017. Multiple vacancies are available.

Duties will consist of field work for an ecological study of residential yards in and around the city of Baltimore, MD. The primary focus will be on survey and characterization of plants, birds, and insects. Some laboratory preparation and computer data entry will also be needed.

Other Duties

Applicant should be able to work effectively as part of a team.

Physical requirements include: kneeling, digging, crouching and standing for long periods of time, and hiking while carrying field equipment (no more than 50 lbs) for up to 1 mile.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in a field closely applicable to the subject of the project; OR Education and experience equivalent to a BA, working in a research environment and performing increasingly responsible tasks assisting senior researchers.

Experience with plant, insect, or bird identification is strongly desired.

Must enjoy summer field work (hot, humid conditions).
