Postdoctoral Appointee – Photonic Devices and Applications

: We are seeking a creative, motivated Postdoctoral Appointee with a passion for exploring new photonics and photon sensor technologies that have high potential to impact national security applications\. You will assume a key role within a high performing and cohesive team of applied physicists, electrical and optical engineers, and material scientists to perform R&D that will enable next\-generation optical sensors and communication systems\. Opportunities exist for contributing across a full spectrum of relevant technology areas, working from device concept and simulation through fabrication and test\. Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to: + Performing experimental research involving novel semiconductor\-based emitters and detectors, nanophotonic/plasmonic modulators, optical sensors, and infrared imaging arrays+ Conceiving, modeling, fabricating, and testing new photonic device concepts such as photonic circuits and photon detectors+ Prototyping and evaluating photonic microsystems that integrate micro\-optics, optoelectronics, and electronics+ Publishing original research in top\-tier journals and conference proceeding+ Delivering results and reporting findings to co\-workers and customers+ Developing and pursuing new opportunities in areas that support Sandia mission activities Required: + PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or closely related field+ Strong academic performance as evidenced by minimum cumulative GPA\(s\) of 3\.2/4\.0 for each relevant undergraduate degree and 3\.5/4\.0 for each relevant graduate degree+ Record of publication and innovation, as evidenced by peer\-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, technical books, or issued patents+ Experience in experimental characterization of compound semiconductor optoelectronics, nanophotonics, plasmonics, sensor arrays and/or relevant materials+ Experience with solid\-state physics, electromagnetics, quantum mechanics, classical optics, optoelectronic device engineering, compound semiconductor materials and/or related fields+ Experience with design, simulation, fabrication, and testing of photonic devices, materials, and/or optical systems+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE L clearance Desired: + An established record of successful project execution for R&D activities, including project scheduling, reporting, and delivering results+ Experience with cleanroom processing techniques, such as metal and dielectric materials deposition, wet and dry etching, and lithographic patterning methods+ Experience with optical laboratory\-based testing using lasers, detectors, modulators, fibers, planar waveguides, and relevant test equipment+ Familiarity with heterogeneous integration and microscale packaging techniques+ Familiarity with opto\-mechanical design, drawing, and machining+ Familiarity with photonic integrated circuits+ Familiarity with photon detector array technology, especially in the infrared+ Familiarity designing and characterizing RF microelectronic circuits and devices+ Proficiency with software programming and instrument control in languages such as C\#, LabVIEW, and MATLAB+ Ability to work across disciplines, and to solve problems in a highly collaborative environment+ Ability to discover, understand, and articulate customer needs+ Strong self\-motivation to work effectively as an independent contributor+ Strong communication and interpersonal skills as needed to work successfully in a team environment Department Description: The III\-V Optoelectronics Department develops compound semiconductor and RF devices, photonics, and microsystems for national security applications including high\-performance computing, communications, renewable energy, sensing and imaging\. As part of Sandia’s Microsystems Science, Technology and Components Center, we research, design, fabricate, prototype, test and deliver novel lasers, photonic integrated circuits, RF and photonic microsystems, and sensors\. We focus on R&D of high performance technology platforms and customized microsystems\. We leverage state\-of\-the\-art materials and fabrication capabilities within Sandia’s MESA cleanroom complex to serve a broad mix of internal and external customers\.
