Tech Staff – Compound-Semiconductor Photonics Engineer/Scientist – MIT Lincoln Laboratory – Lexington, MA

Group 82—Laser Technology and Applications

The Laser Technology and Applications Group develops application-specific solid-state lasers, semiconductor lasers, and beam control and diagnostics for high-energy laser systems. Examples of research activities include creating cryogenic-laser-based illuminators for sensor applications, demonstrating wavelength and coherent laser-beam-combining techniques for scaling fiber amplifier and semiconductor laser arrays to higher brightness, and developing a ground terminal for an advanced NASA laser experiment to a moon-orbiting satellite. These activities span the range from epitaxial growth of semiconductor laser materials and demonstrating innovative laser devices in the laboratory to designing and field-testing complete optical systems.

Technical Staff position in the Laser Technology and Applications Group requires a candidate having both a broad background and a detailed understanding of compound-semiconductor photonic/optoelectronic materials, devices, and integration. Will work with other Staff to develop novel device and system concepts involving multiple aspects of photonic components and electronic-photonic integrated circuits that will have significant impact on future DoD mission areas. Responsibilities will include design and simulation of photonic/optoelectronic devices, interaction with internal materials growth and fabrication experts, utilization of external fabrication houses and foundries for development of photonic components and integrated circuits, and development and implementation of sophisticated laboratory measurement equipment.

Requirements:

Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field with at least 3 years direct experience with the design, fabrication, and characterization of compound-semiconductor photonic components (lasers, optical amplifiers, photodiodes, optical modulators, optical filters) and photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Compound material systems of interest include InP, GaAs, GaSb, and GaN. Experience with electronic-photonic integrated techniques and subsystems is also desired.

Desired Skills:

Experience with detailed modeling and simulation of photonic devices and physical mechanisms. Experience with the design of both interband and intraband (i.e., quantum cascade) compound-semiconductor lasers. Familiarity with aspects of monolithic and/or hybrid photonic integration techniques, including epitaxial material growth and regrowth, quantum-well intermixing (QWI), and active/passive hybrid integration. Experience with systems-level applications of photonic devices and integrated photonic subsystems. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
