General Dynamics Mission Systems has an immediate opening for a Senior Electrical/Photonics Hardware Design Engineer. This position provides an opportunity to further advance the cutting-edge technology that supports some of our nation’s core defense/intelligence services and systems. General Dynamics Mission Systems employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions. This position is part of a ~50 person team and will be the primary hardware design engineer at the location. The candidate will need to be able to work independently with minimal oversight.
Typical program duties and desired skills include:
- Derive requirements, design, build, and test devices containing both electrical and optical hardware
- Troubleshooting and design updates of existing hardware
- Embedded software development using real-time operating systems (VxWorks, etc.)
- FPGA design, development, and testing (using VHDL or similar)
- Experience with fiber-optic devices including amplifiers, splitters, attenuators and photo-receivers/transmitters
- Experience with interface control standards and methods (TCP/IP, UDP)
- Expert knowledge of lab practices, assembly, and test of electrical and optical hardware
- PREFERRED — knowledge of telecommunications hardware and test equipment
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND TASKS:
- Responsible and accountable for the electrical technical planning, scheduling, cost analysis, risk analysis and successful execution of small to medium programs or major electrical subsystems of a larger program containing substantial electrical content
- Substantial contribution to electrical requirements analysis, requirements definition, requirements management, functional analysis, performance analysis (e.g. timing, power, etc.), interface analysis and definition for the design, integration and verification of electrical components, equipment and systems for major programs and projects containing substantial, complex electrical content
- Leads the requirements and functional allocation to electrical units, modules and components
- Plans and leads electrical engineering root cause analysis for complex electrical issues, conducts experimental tests, evaluates results to formulate and implement solutions to issues
- Substantial contribution to the generation and maintenance of electrical work products (i.e. plans, specifications, design documentation, etc.) used for internal consumption and/or deliverable to external customers
- Develops and presents electrical requirements, concepts, designs, decisions and results to internal management, other organizations, team mates and external customers
- Provides substantial contributions to technical subcontract management that may include SOW development, proposal evaluation, source selection, technical oversight, and subcontractor work product evaluation and acceptance
- Leads electrical reviews of electrical components, equipment and systems
- Evaluates vendor capability to support product development
- Applies a strong understanding of the organizationally defined electrical processes throughout the lifecycle of the program or project
- Participation in the improvement of the electrical organizational processes
- Supports the generation of technical engineering products by using the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the electrical development life cycle
- Leads the research and analysis of data, such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
- Selects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability
- Leads small technical proposals and contributes to proposals
- May serve as a proposal cost or technical volume manager
- May supervise lower level employees
- Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments
- Guides the successful completion of programs and projects
- Generally works with multiple work groups, including with senior levels of l work groups
- Generally works on diverse range of complex problems requiring ingenuity and creativity without appreciable direction
- Generally has regular contact with project leaders and Program Managers and Senior Managers including external customers
- May function in a project leadership role
- Erroneous decisions or recommendations may result in failure to achieve organization objectives
