Postdoctoral Appointee – Semiconductor Device Fabrication

: The MESA Fabrication Department is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct leading\-edge research in the area of advanced semiconductor device fabrication, process development, integration and electrical testing for a broad range of applications \(e\.g\. MEMS, CMOS, photonics\)\. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Support Sandia’s advanced semiconductor development programs, ranging from Sandia’s radiation hard CMOS to compound semiconductors\.+ Develop novel dielectric and piezoelectric thin films for a wide range of applications by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition \(CVD\), high\-density plasma CVD, sub\-atmospheric CVD, and sputtering\.+ Develop process device integration for devices based in silicon and compound semiconductors, and associated electrical test, characterization, and verification of manufactured devices\.+ Partner with physical science researchers to understand and model advanced devices\.+ Use models to improve and tailor device performance for response, speed requirements, and integration into complex platforms\.+ Publish results in journal articles and present at conferences\. Required: + Ph\.D\. in materials science, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, physics, or a related science or engineering discipline received within the last five years\.+ Experience in one of the following categories, as evidenced by publications, patents, and conference presentations: – Experience with semiconductor processing and integration knowledge\.- Device research particularly with Si, III\-V, or other compound semiconductors\.- Thin film deposition and thin film characterization \(optical and/or electrical\)\.+ Must be able to work in a cleanroom environment\. Desired: + Knowledge of semiconductor fabrication equipment \(e\.g\. plasma based deposition, lithography, dry etch\) required for fabricating a semiconductor device from conception to test\.+ Knowledge of typical semiconductor device electrical characterization equipment\.+ Knowledge of typical semiconductor material characterization techniques \(e\.g\. AFM, SEM, FTIR, ellipsometry\)\.+ Working knowledge of scientific computing tools such as Matlab, Mathematica, or Comsol\.+ Technical background and eagerness to learn new tools/techniques and to share knowledge with the team\.+ The desire and ability to publish in scientific refereed journals as well as present at scientific conferences\.+ Adaptability to changing tasks and projects as needed\.+ Problem\-solving skills to develop creative technical solutions\.+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills\.+ Eagerness to work in a multi\-disciplinary team environment\.+ Ability to bring diverse technical perspectives, experience, and interests to the department\. Department Description: Sandia National Laboratories Microsystems and Engineering Sciences Applications \(MESA\) complex provides unique processing capability in semiconductor microfabrication\. The MESAFab Operations departments develop and maintain core semiconductor processing capabilities and capacity that enable our customers to build differentiating Microsystems products\. Two unique facilities are co\-located within the 65,000 square foot MESAFab complex including: \(1\) a 12,000 square foot Class 1 Silicon Fab for 6\-inch silicon wafer processing and \(2\) a 15,000 square foot Class 10 and Class 100 MicroFab for compound semiconductor material processing and silicon wafer post\-processing\. Key microfabrication processing areas include photolithography, reactive ion etch, wet etch/clean, oxidation and diffusion, thin films, CMP \(planarization\), ion implantation, metrology, deep reactive silicon ion etch, wafer bonding and thinning, electroplating, packaging, MEMS release, yield learning and statistical process control\. The Silicon Fab has processing expertise in both CMOS and MEMS technologies\. Over 150 equipment sets are maintained, supported and operated 24 hours per day, 5 days a week \(3 shifts\)\. Both processing and maintenance expertise are staffed on all 3 shifts\. We offer unique prototyping capabilities\. We are capable of producing full flow production lots with quick turnaround time as well as performing flexible process development\. The MicroFab has expertise in compound semiconductor material processing\. All of the MicroFab equipment \(180 tools\) are maintained and supported by our in\-house maintenance and technical staff\. We are capable of producing highly customized, low\-volume production or prototyping devices and have flexible processing capabilities\.
