The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Tufts University invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions in Electrical and Computer Engineering to begin in September 2023. We are seeking candidates at the rank of Associate Professor, but exceptional candidates at the rank of Assistant or Full Professor will also be considered.

This search is part of a broader hiring campaign by the School of Engineering to grow its research and educational capabilities in engineering for sustainability. The School of Engineering is deeply committed to developing pragmatic, innovative solutions for environmentally and socially responsible use of energy and materials applying methods that minimize environmental damage to the natural environment. Currently, tenure-stream faculty searches are ongoing in four of the six academic departments centered on the common themes of climate change and sustainable materials. Candidates applying for this position should express how their research goals align with this sustainability theme.

Candidates are sought primarily in one of the following areas or closely related fields:

  • Computer Engineering with focus including, but not limited to, security; embedded and real-time systems; computer architecture; and computer systems. In these areas, we are interested in new emerging applications such as mobile and wearable computing; quantum computing; machine learning; autonomous vehicles and robotics.
  • Electronic materials with focus on epitaxial growth (e.g. MBE) and fabrication of novel devices for emerging applications: e.g. renewable energy, power electronics, millimeter wave and terahertz, photonics, quantum computing, spintronics, and other next generation technologies.

Electrical and Computer Engineering has grown significantly in the past twenty years. Located in the Boston area, the department benefits from outstanding undergraduate and graduate students, collaborative faculty, and cross-disciplinary research opportunities. Tufts University is one of the smallest universities ranked as a Research 1 university, and it offers the best of a liberal arts college atmosphere, coupled with the intellectual and technological resources of a major research university. Tufts University supports and encourages a culture of interdisciplinary research and there are numerous such opportunities within the School of Engineering, the School of Arts and Sciences, and through graduate and professional schools.

We are looking for engaged and engaging researchers and teachers with a strong vision who can build and maintain a high-quality research program at Tufts and whose research will both connect with some of our current faculty and extend into new areas. Tufts’ School of Engineering (SOE) distinguishes itself by the interdisciplinary focus and integrative nature of its engineering education and research programs, within the intellectually rich environment of both a “Research I” university and a top-ranked undergraduate institution. The past fifteen years have been a period of extraordinary growth for SOE at Tufts, with recruitment of well over half of its current tenured and tenure-track faculty members and a more than three-fold increase in research productivity. Tufts offers the best of a liberal arts college atmosphere, coupled with the intellectual and technological resources of a major research university. Home to seven graduate and professional schools across three campuses, Tufts University prides itself on its culture of cross-school partnerships. Located on Tufts’ Medford/Somerville campus, only six miles from historic downtown Boston, SOE faculty members have extensive opportunities for academic and industrial collaboration, as well as participation in the rich intellectual life of the region.

The successful candidate will join an active department that offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs, and thus must demonstrate excellence in teaching as well as the potential to develop an internationally recognized research program. Teaching responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate courses. A doctorate is required. Candidates should submit a clear statement explaining why they are interested in Tufts and how their skillset will fit well into the department and university ecosystem.

Questions about the position should be addressed to Professor Tom Vandervelde, search committee chair; [email address: [email protected]] Candidates should submit their application, including:

  1. A letter of application explaining your interest in Tufts and in this position
  2. Your curriculum vitae
  3. A statement describing your current and planned research
  4. A statement of your teaching philosophy
  5. A diversity statement
  6. A sample of your scholarly work
  7. Three to five professional references. Confidential letters will be requested from these individuals later in the process online through Interfolio at

Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled; applications submitted after December 1, 2022 are also welcome.
