The Department of Physics and the lab of Dr. Teitelbaum invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Postdoctoral Research Scholar position using free electron lasers and other femtosecond x-ray sources to investigate condensed matter systems far from equilibrium. The scholar will be working with international collaborative teams on federally funded projects to use x-rays to explore the properties and dynamics of hard and soft condensed matter systems. Preference will be given to those candidates with expertise and strong interests in nonequilibrium physics of hard condensed matter or soft matter systems and experience with either femtosecond laser systems or bright x-ray sources such as synchrotrons and free electron lasers.
All positions will involve extensive use of x-ray user facilities (synchrotrons and free electron lasers) such as LCLS, NSLS-II, European XFEL, and APS, as well as opportunities to be involved with the CXFEL project (biodesign.asu.edu/cxfel/).
Areas of focus and research projects include:
- Self-assembly dynamics of hieratical nanostructures:
Self-assembly of colloidal nanocrystals into superlattices, i.e. long-range ordered arrays, represents a frontier in the facile bottom-up development of materials whose emergent properties can be intentionally and predictively designed. Our collaborators on this project recently synthesized electronically coupled superlattices of semiconductor nanocrystals, which will enhance their potential applications in technologies such as photovoltaics and efficient solid-state lighting. The overall goal of our ongoing collaboration is to reveal the molecular mechanisms that will extend this approach to a more diverse range of systems. Candidates with experience with soft matter systems, X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS), or semiconductor nanoparticle are encouraged to inquire about this project.
- Structural dynamics in quantum materials:
Novel experimental tools have revealed the critical role of nanoscale to atomic inhomogeneities in the dynamics of light-driven systems. Bright, femtosecond x-ray sources have unique capabilities to probe the role these inhomogeneities play in controlling the path materials take through phase transitions. A postdoctoral researcher in this area would lead the design and execution of experiments at XFELs around the world, collaborating with an international team focused on the structural dynamics of strongly driven materials using hard x-ray diffraction and diffuse scattering. The postdoc would also participate in construction of a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser lab on the ASU campus, leading the construction of optical spectroscopy setups.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Qualified applicants must hold a PhD in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field by the start date of the position.
- The applicant must show evidence of effective scientific communication through conference papers, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference or workshop presentations, or preprints.
- Demonstrated experience or future commitment to work with diverse student, faculty and staff populations
Desired Qualifications: Applicants should have experience in experimental x-ray scattering or femtosecond lasers. Ideal candidates will have experience in one or more of the following areas:
- X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS)
- Hard x-ray diffraction of condensed matter systems
- Use of X-ray free electron laser, synchrotron, or inelastic neutron scattering facilities
- Experience constructing or operating amplified femtosecond lasers systems
- THz spectroscopy
- Pump-probe, time-domain Raman, or transient absorption spectroscopy
- Experience with hard condensed matter (i.e. single crystals) or soft matter (i.e. glasses and self-assembled aggregates or polymers), especially experience with phase transitions and nonequilibrium systems
- Experience with data analysis expertise using scientific programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C++. High performance computing (HPC) experience is a plus.
This is a fixed-term, fiscal year (twelve-month) appointment with an anticipated flexible start date of June 1, 2023. There are no tenure implications. Renewal of this position is based upon satisfactory performance and availability of resources. The position is for one year and can be extended based on performance. Candidates must be within four years from receipt of their doctoral degree. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.
Salary range is $55,000 to $65,000 based on qualifications and experience.
