The U.S. Army’s DEVCOM – Armaments Center (AC), seeks applicants for one post doctoral research position.

As a post doc at AC-Benet labs, you will lead a self-directed research program into group IV alloy optoelectronic materials, using pulsed laser processing techniques.  The goal will be to study optoelectronic properties, material quality (structural characterization, defect identification) and atomic ordering as a function of nonequilibrium processing with pulsed lasers  in comparison to material grown with conventional techniques such as chemical vapor deposition.

Capabilities

Research will be conducted at Benet Labs, near Albany, NY.  Benet has extensive laser tools and structural and optoelectronic characterization equipment, including two nanosecond pulsed laser systems, deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), an optical parametric oscillator (OPO), microwave reflectivity lifetime spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), and dual-beam SEM/Focused Ion Beam (FIB) for sample prep.  Other techniques, such as atom probe tomography (APT), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), terahertz photocarrier lifetime spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), and more, are available through Benet’s network of collaborators, including the University of Arkansas, Dartmouth University, Wesleyan University, École Polytechnique-Montreal, and several Department of Defense labs.

Qualifications

  • A doctorate in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Electrical Engineering is required
  • Familiarity with some of the above techniques, and/or pulsed laser systems, and/or group IV semiconductors and alloys, are highly desirable
  • Demonstrated excellence in research as evidenced by journal publications and conference presentations
  • Ability to work collaboratively with researchers at other institutions, and to proactively initiate and maintain such collaborations
  • The position is only open to full U.S. citizens. Green card holders are not eligible for this position.  You must be able to obtain a security clearance.

Funding

Fellowships are administered through the National Research Council’s Research Associateship program.  The salary is $65k, plus health insurance, relocation expenses, and an annual conference travel stipend.  The position is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years, subject to the availability of funding.
