Job Description |
Spectrum Lab is an interdisciplinary MSU research center established in 1999 and reports to the Vice-President of Research and Economic (VPR). It carries out fundamental and controlled unclassified optics and photonics research. Spectrum Lab is dedicated to innovation in applied optics and photonics with a three-fold mission to: - Develop and help commercialize Montana grown opto-electronic technologies.
- Transfer and develop technologies to Montana companies.
- Provide enhanced educational, research, and employment opportunities for Montana undergraduate and graduate students.
| | The Director of the Spectrum Lab is responsible for directing and facilitating the successful fulfillment of the mission of Spectrum Lab, providing oversight of fiscal and human resources, and managing the conduct of funded research. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: - Manage and oversee Spectrum Lab’s budgets, accounting, personnel, facilities, space, security, and safety.
- Make hiring and termination decisions; oversee and approve letters of appointment, perform annual reviews of staff and students; determine staff salaries and student stipends; manage Conflict of Interest plans; and ensure employee’s compliance with MSU policies.
- Oversee the administration and management of Spectrum Lab’s grant and contract activity including coordinate principal investigator’s activities; allocate personnel, space, equipment to G&C activities; and oversee the management of budgets and spending.
- Attract and direct externally funded projects. Develop grant and contract proposals with other PIs and personnel (both in Spectrum Lab and in other departments). Generate or guide the generation of funding for Spectrum Lab to support Spectrum Lab personnel and students. Serve as principal investigator on appropriate grants and contracts. Encourage and facilitate other members of Spectrum Lab to be principal investigator on grants and contracts, as appropriate.
- Ensure the success of the educational mission of Spectrum Lab by supporting, mentoring, advising, and guiding graduate and undergraduate students, with the help of SL staff and affiliated faculty.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to faculty, scientists, engineers, and students.
- Oversee the advising and training of students in Spectrum Lab.
- Develop and promote productive working relationships among the staff and students.
- Encourage the dissemination of research results, as appropriate, with published papers and presentations.
- Foster and facilitate interdisciplinary photonic technology research activities at MSU. Foster collaborations between Spectrum Lab and other academic departments and centers.
- Foster interactions and collaborations with local optics industry. Establish and maintain university-corporate partnerships to affect the transfer of MSU developed optical and photonic technologies into Montana companies.
- Communicate on behalf of Spectrum Lab with the academic and industrial community, state and federal agencies, private industry, and the general public.
- Oversee and ensure compliance with Spectrum Lab’s technology control plan, Laser safety policies, and other MSU policies and procedures.
- Help foster the utilization of and collaboration with the MSU’s Applied Research Lab (ARL).
- Report annually to Vice President of Research on the activities of the Spectrum Lab and justifying internal budgetary and space support for Spectrum Lab.
- Form, report to, and interact with a Spectrum Lab Advisory Board.
- Promote Spectrum Lab within university, community, and state.
- Develop and implement a strategic plan for the growth and sustainability of the Spectrum Lab.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills | - PhD in optics and photonics related discipline with exceptional experience in the management of personnel and technology programs.
- Experience working with or for university technology centers.
- Record of securing and successfully managing externally funded research programs.
- Extensive knowledge of and experience with current and emerging optics and photonics research topics and the ability to develop productive and sustainable research programs.
- Record of successfully recruiting, mentoring, managing, motivating, and retaining technical staff and students.
