The Wyant College of Optical Sciences (OSC) and the Department of Medical Imaging (DMI) in the College of Medicine at the University of Arizona are seeking outstanding candidates for a shared tenure-track faculty position focused on biomedical imaging and image science.  This position is intended to benefit from and contribute to the strong historical ties that exist between OSC and DMI, especially in areas involving advanced optics-related techniques.  The position will also benefit from collaborations with the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the College of Engineering.  We encourage applicants with research interests in novel clinical or preclinical imaging instrumentation or methods, their applications, and/or image interpretation tools that will enhance or complement existing strengths in gamma- and x-ray tomographies, magnetic resonance, ultrasound, photo-acoustics, and machine learning/AI.   This search seeks candidates who will bolster the collaborative potential in these areas, while also establishing new directions of research.

The Wyant College of Optical Sciences is world-renowned for the breadth and depth of its research and education programs in optical sciences. The college’s Image Science program is one of four major research areas, with current activities including gamma- and x-ray imaging, advanced multi-modal endoscope hardware, low-cost diagnostic hardware for remote healthcare, deep-tissue imaging with structured illumination, and a large variety of computational and compressive imaging methods in biomedical, consumer, remote sensing and defense applications.  The Image Science group also enjoys collaborative opportunities with the college’s other three major research areas of Optical Engineering, Photonics, and Optical Physics.

The Department of Medical Imaging within the College of Medicine engages in diverse research in discovery, translational and clinical science, rich sub-specialty based clinical practice, and educational programs for students and over 50 postgraduate trainees. The dedicated research division comprises a spectrum of senior and junior investigators and is engaged in collaborative multi-disciplinary research both across departments within the College of Medicine and University-wide. Research involving clinical cohorts and images is coordinated by the department through its partnership with Banner Health, which stores health records and images across 30 hospitals in unified databases.

OSC and DMI strongly support the University of Arizona’s diversity and inclusiveness strategic initiatives, designed to create an inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, and students. To foster diversity in our community, we encourage applicants from diverse perspectives and backgrounds to apply. The prevailing candidate will be expected to be supportive of diversity and inclusiveness efforts in the department and college.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance plans; life insurance and disability programs; sick leave and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; state and optional retirement plans; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!

Duties and Responsibilities:

This tenure-track position anticipates a candidate with demonstrated strength in his or her field of research. Successful candidates are expected to set up a world-class research program and demonstrate strong commitment to teaching. Duties include:

  • Cultivating a world-renowned research program.
  • Establishing a strong record of student mentorship and teaching.
  • Participating in both undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Participating in service and outreach for the OSC and DMI.

For private sector or government laboratory applicants, lack of a proven teaching and extramural research funding record could be remedied with other related credentials that demonstrate strong communications skills and a demonstrated history of technical depth and leadership.  We seek an individual who is able to attract and work with a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students and colleagues.  Development of novel courses pertaining to the candidate’s area of expertise, as well as exceptional teaching of our core curriculum, is expected.
