We are currently seeking innovative scientists or engineers with in-depth knowledge and experience with liquid crystal optical devices. This is a full-time position and requires an advanced degree in material, chemistry, polymer, science or engineering, or similar, and a strong background in liquid crystal technologies, optical films and innovation. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic cross-functional and fast-paced team.

Job Description

Research Engineer, Waveguide Fabrication Responsibilities

  • Fabricate optical devices with liquid crystal materials in a cleanroom environment.
  • Establish processes to meet quality, yield, repeatability, and manufacturability requirements, with associated documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with optical/material/process/mechanical engineers to advance both component-level and system-level prototypes.
  • Contribute to engineering specifications and product development as point of contact accountable for fabrication-related requests.
  • Support evaluation and metrology of materials and optical components.
  • Perform technical assessments of vendor capability gaps to assess risk and resource requirements.

May oversee engineers’ work based on project needs and work experience.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree or equivalent experience in Material Science, Chemistry, Optics, Physics or a related field.
  • Expertise in thin film fabrication, precision coating, additive printing, and metrology.
  • Hands-on experience in photolithography, optical films, or nanofabrication technology.
  • 3+ years experience in prototyping optical components for AR/VR viewing optics (e.g., lenses, waveguides, etc.) or display modules (LCD, OLED, ULED, etc.) or closely related areas.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills in a fast-paced multi-cultural and cross-functional team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct (hands-on) experience with fabrication and metrology of diffractive optics and/or polarization elements.
  • Experience in simulation tools or methods, such as MATLAB, Python, LCD Master or equivalent, COMSOL, Jones Matrices, or RCWA
  • Strong organizational skills managing multiple tasks simultaneously and experience shifting priorities to meet business needs and deadlines.
  • Innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven track record of achieving results as grants, fellowships, publications, etc.
