The Whiting School of Engineering (WSE) at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) invites applications for the position of Director of the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI). The Director will be appointed as a full-time faculty member in the Whiting School of Engineering and will be encouraged to remain active in research, with strategic leadership of the Institute as their top priority. Appointed by the Dean of the Whiting School of Engineering, the Director of HEMI serves a renewable 5-year term.
Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute
HEMI is the largest and most well-funded of the Whiting School’s 25 Interdisciplinary Centers and Institutes, and formally bridges the Whiting School of Engineering, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, and the Applied Physics Laboratory. The Institute currently comprises over 50 tenure-line and research faculty, along with their associated graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. The Institute includes collaborations with numerous partners from academia, government, and industry. HEMI’s vision is to develop the science and technology that protects people, structures, and the planet. Its mission is to provide global intellectual leadership to advance the fundamental science associated with materials and structures under extreme conditions and demonstrating extreme performance.
The HEMI Director will work with colleagues in and beyond HEMI to increase its impact by both enhancing its historic strengths and providing global intellectual leadership to advance the fundamental science associated with materials and structures under extreme conditions and demonstrating extreme performance. To these ends, the Director will identify ways in which the Institute will continue to grow and evolve. In collaboration with the Whiting School and the University, the Director will ensure that the Institute is able to recruit, sustain, and deploy the human and financial resources needed to further distinguish itself. Collaborations with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory present opportunities to bring additional resources, expertise, and scale to advance HEMI research. Beyond the University, the HEMI Director is expected to foster connections with industry as part of the Institute’s efforts to expand its base of resources and relationships, to disseminate knowledge and discoveries, and to develop and transfer technologies that may have an impact in the world.
WSE has a stated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As the leader of the Institute and within the School, HEMI’s Director will work to enhance and expand diversity and inclusion at all levels and will ensure that the Institute is a welcoming and supportive environment for all.
