Electrical Engineer, Hardware Design | Leonardo

Job Purpose:

The electrical design team at Leonardo Electronics is a small, highly collaborative group focused on driver and control solutions for high powered and specialty laser diode products. We are seeking to add a Hardware Design Engineer to the team to enhance our capabilities. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator, self-motivated, results oriented, and will work well in a team environment. This is a very hands on position and the candidate will be expected to be comfortable working with PCBAs, electronic components, and typical electronic lab equipment (DMMs, Oscilloscopes, Power Supplies, etc.). Electrical troubleshooting skills are a must. Some work will be done in a cleanroom environment.

The chief responsibility of this position is the detailed electrical design, development, and verification of digital/mixed signal Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs). These typically consist of a mixture of programmable logic devices (PIC microcontroller), sensor interfaces, ADC/DAC, buffers, and memory. There is a lot of overlap between various team activities, so opportunities to contribute and take the lead in analog/power/SMPS electronics design and cable/harness design will also be available.

Duties:

Leadership of all aspects of digital and mixed signal design through:

  • Developing and documenting design requirements and architectures.
  • Full life cycle development – including part selection, schematic entry, PCB layout, analysis, and verification/validation, and integration.
  • Developing test procedures and testing to verify performance of designs.
  • Generating engineering documents, including drawings, reports, user manuals, and work instructions etc.
  • Defining and managing vendor and sub-contracted activities.
  • Reporting progress to program management and the customer on a regular basis.

Required Skills/Qualifications:

MSEE degree OR a BSEE degree and 2+ years of applicable design experience. Experience using a design schematic capture and PCB layout tool (Altium preferred). Experience defining electronics requirements. Experience interfacing a microcontroller with peripheral analog devices (sensors, buffers, ADC, DAC) and digital devices (memory and programmable logic {SPI, SCI, I2C etc.}). Experience with common serial communication standards (RS232, RS422, RS485, etc.).

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

Experience developing electronic products for Military, Aerospace, and/or Medical markets. Experience with optoelectronics and optical environments. Experience with product qualification and verification testing. Root Cause and Corrective Actions (RCCA) techniques. Experience utilizing a structured design & development process. Ability to work with internal/external suppliers and procurement. Experience working with suppliers or managing sub-contracted activities. Experience composing and debugging embedded firmware in C. Experience simulating circuits using OrCAD PSpice.
