DESY, with more than 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world’s leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
High power, high repetition rate ultrafast lasers are essential for generating and manipulating the electron beams land for most of the science experiments at the X-Ray Free Electron Laser facilities FLASH and European XFEL. In a joint R&D project between DESY, University of Hamburg, TU Hamburg and Amphos GmbH we are advancing lasers for electron generation in photoinjectors. A critical parameter for the generated electron beam is the emittance, which can be optimized via the laser pulse shape. The emittance is a key parameter to enable next generation accelerators and free electron lasers. We will leverage the power of state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to optimize the laser pulse shape using advanced laser pulse shaping methods. We are seeking a highly motivated physicist or engineer with focus on ultrafast laser feedback controls and machine learning.
About your role:
- Develop an optimization scheme for laser pulses in a high-power ultrashort pulse laser system used in photoinjectors
- Use state-of-the-art optimization and machine learning techniques to deliver these goals
- Work in close collaboration with project partners in machine learning and photoinjector optimization
About you:
- Master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, or computer science or equivalent qualification or Bachelor’s degree with relevant practical experience
- Practical experience with optics and lasers
- Strong experience software development (Python, Matlab, or C++)
- ldeally experience with machine learning
- ldeally experience with control systems
Good reasons to join:
