SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) Directorate seeks a Laser Engineer to design, develop, characterize, integrate, and maintain state of the art laser systems for the Laser Engineering department.

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is the world’s first hard X-ray free electron laser (FEL), and operates as a user facility for a global community of scientists, providing ultrashort, ultra-bright pulses of X-rays to seven experimental instruments focused on specific areas of science, probing the structure and dynamics of matter at the atomic spatial scale and femtosecond timescale. Femtosecond optical lasers are an integral part of many of these experiments, and the LCLS Laser Engineering Department is responsible for deploying and supporting cutting-edge laser systems for groundbreaking scientific research at LCLS. The Laser Engineering Department also supports other laser-based programs at SLAC including the photo injector lasers for the LCLS accelerator, accelerator test facilities such as Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED), the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET), and the Next Linear Collider Test Accelerator (NLCTA), and other research programs such as High Energy Density (HED) science, and the PULSE and SIMES Stanford independent laboratories at SLAC.

This position will report to the Group Leader for Laser Systems in the Laser Engineering Department. Members of this group are responsible for the design, development, testing, and facility integration of advanced laser sources coupled to accelerators and LCLS experiments.

SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park, CA. Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Support the Laser Systems group to develop, maintain and operate laser systems used in the LCLS photoinjector to maintain high reliability and 24/7 operations.
  • Evaluate and plan maintenance/upgrade activities for the LCLS Injector laser system through coordination with Operations.
  • Lead representative for the laser group at the daily Accelerator Operations meetings.
  • Provide and coordinate support to other facilities within the Accelerator Directorate including Next Linear Collider Test Accelerator (NLCTA), Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET), Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) Experimental Area, and LCLS 2.
  • Participate in laser system support for the Lasers in the LCLS Science group as needed.

Other duties may also be assigned.

  • Duties specific to LCLS Injector Laser support:
  • Area specific safety oversight, training and orientation
  • Daily work planning and control
  • Coordination of technical and facility support personnel effort and resources
  • Coordination of effort and resources with other area and building managers

Other responsibilities:

  • All area specific work and activities are performed in accordance with SLAC safety policies
  • Work is planned, controlled, managed and released in accordance with SLAC WPC policies
  • Lab activity complies with all safety, environmental and waste management directives
  • Supervise technical and administrative support as needed

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical science, engineering, or related studies and 4+ years’ experience in ultra-fast laser and X-ray based science including experience with high energy and high peak-intensity chirped pulse amplification (CPA) laser systems, their associated pump sources, wavelength extension devices, and diagnostics.
  • Organizational skills and ability to multi-task and complete assignments.
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate in an operations team.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills to prepare technical and scientific documentation and presentations.

In addition, preferred requirements include experience in the following areas:

  • A Master’s degree or PhD in physical science, engineering, or related studies
  • DOE funded national lab research or user facility operations and research
  • Integrating ultrafast laser systems into complex scientific experiments including the development of control and diagnostic systems and software.
  • Experience with optical modeling software such as ZeMax or CodeV.
