The Wesleyan Physics Department provides cutting-edge education and research at Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. levels. Our students master topics in focus areas that include quantum computing, low-temperature plasmas, photonics, materials science, biomolecular interactions, fluid mechanics, and more.

Undergraduate and graduate students work side-by-side with faculty on research that is supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards & Technology, the American Chemical Society, the Air Force, and other national funding organizations.

Reporting to the Chair, Physics, this position is responsible for lecture demonstrations and ordering, maintaining, building, repairing and operating equipment used in the instructional labs, and in the Physics Department.

Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare and arrange lecture demonstrations.
  • Support instructional labs through maintenance and setup of lab equipment and suggest new experiments.
  • Work with faculty in the development, fabrication, or refinement of equipment for instructional purposes.
  • Coordinate with faculty to assess current and future needs, prepare and make purchases for instructional equipment.
  • Coordinate with other departments and divisions (machine shop, IT) when services beyond the facilities of the department are required.
  • Prepare and monitor the budget for all demonstration needs for lectures and laboratories.
  • Install and upgrade data acquisition software as needed.
  • Instruct faculty and students on the proper and safe use of the equipment.
  • Organize and maintain the inventory of equipment (including online demonstration videos and simulations).
  • Manage and supervise stockrooms and storage areas.
  • Maintain OSHA & EPA Lab Standard compliance in all teaching labs, including establishing and maintaining a library of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all items in inventory, safety supplies, and related training.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelors in physics, electronics, industrial arts, astronomy, engineering and/or a related subject and three years experience in STEM classroom support or mechanical work (student experience will be considered) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Experience in working with and repairing wood, metal, electronic and electrical equipment.
Knowledge of basic inventory control.
Ability to update computer operating systems, install and update software and ensure that all lab computers are up-to-date.
Ability to handle a variety of work priorities and demonstrate initiative.
Ability to follow through with instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, faculty, university personnel, and the public.
Experience with troubleshooting of non-functioning equipment.
Experience with learning new equipment and staying on top of new developments.
Ability to recommend (after discussion with faculty) the appropriate demonstration/experiment for a given introductory physics concept.
Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications: A master’s degree in physics or a related subject.
Up-to-date knowledge in STEM demonstrations.
Familiarity with Vernier, PASCO lab equipment and demos.
Experience in working with physics instructional labs and demonstrations.
Knowledge of OSHA and EPA lab Standard compliance for teaching labs.
