Context and Objectives
Physical neuromorphic architectures aim to solve complex tasks with low power intake and high processing bandwidth. Various leading tech companies, start-ups, and academic research centers have focused their current research on using electronic and photonic devices to achieve this objective. In the past decade, artificial neural networks (ANN) in the reservoir computing (RC) framework have led to significant success in solving typical benchmark tasks such as time-series predictions, speech processing, and telecom-oriented applications. In this context, our team at CentraleSupélec has already positioned itself in leveraging photonic ANN and RC architectures to analyze the image and video signals with state-of-the-art performance.
The core objectives of the recruited post-doctoral researcher will be the development of novel conceptual architecture to solve classification tasks of multimedia signals with novel ultra-fast, large-scale photonic-based architectures.
Candidate profile
The post-doctoral candidate needs a Ph.D. in applied physics, photonics, electrical engineering or a related field. The candidate must have at least one of the following skills: (i) solid experimental skills in free-space or fibered optical/photonic setup with visible or IR light sources, (ii) measurement and instrument control, and (iii) proficiency in Matlab and/or python. Knowledge of concepts related to complex physical systems and their numerical simulation is recommended. Knowledge of basic machine learning concepts (e.g., recurrent neural network, reservoir computing, etc.) will help immediately be operational on the project but is not mandatory. A previous experience in the field of photonic reservoir computing will also be highly appreciated but is not compulsory. Expected qualities for the candidate: creativity, autonomy, scientific rigor, and willingness to work in a team. Proficiency in English speaking and writing is mandatory, and French is optional, although welcomed.
Research environment
The post-doctoral candidate will be part of a vibrant interdisciplinary research team within the Chair in Photonics located at the heart of a technological cluster of universities and research centers. State-of-the-art research/measurement equipment in photonics and computing (including access to a supercomputer for simulations will be made available). In addition to their core scientific objectives, the candidate will participate in advising students, will present their results at international conferences, and will have the freedom also to explore different ideas. The recruited person could also do a mission or short research stay in a partner laboratory if opportunities present themselves. The candidate will also be able to teach (upon request) to be fully prepared for future academic positions. CentraleSupélec is a French, leading graduate institute in Science and Technology and a founding member of the world-class University Paris-Saclay. It has four locations in France: Metz, Reims, Rennes, and Saclay.
