DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PHYSICS

Assistant Professor in Materials Science / Photonics (two posts) (Ref. 241007005)

The Department of Applied Physics is a leading academic department at the University, known for its strong research capabilities.  In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, the Department achieved the highest proportion of world-leading research within the University and the cost centre.  It played a crucial role in establishing the University Research Facility in Materials Characterization and Device Fabrication, which includes a Materials Research Centre, a Centre for Electron Microscopy, an Atomic Electron Microscopy Laboratory, and a Cleanroom. The Department comprises 29 full-time academic staff members, over 100 research/project personnel, around 100 research postgraduate students, and more than 250 students in two academic programmes.  Its major research areas include nanomaterials, nano/microelectronics, energy materials, photonic materials and devices, and theoretical and computational physics.  The Department is also actively pursuing a strategic move towards international excellence in materials science, green catalysis, and quantum physics.  Please visit the website at https://www.polyu.edu.hk/ap for more information about the Department.

Duties

The appointees will be required to:

(a)    teach Physics, Materials Science, and/or Microelectronics courses up to postgraduate level;

(b)    supervise students in undertaking their undergraduate final year projects and postgraduate research theses;

(c)    establish a vigorous programme of research in ultra-high vacuum cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy, laser molecular beam epitaxy, device physics and/or two-dimensional materials;

(d)    secure external competitive research grants, conduct academic research and publish in top-tier journals;

(e)    take charge of teaching and/or research laboratories, if appropriate; and

(f)     perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants should:

(a)    have a PhD degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science or a related discipline;

(b)    have relevant post-qualification experience and a good track record of research in one of the areas of ultra-high vacuum cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy, laser molecular beam epitaxy, device physics and/or two-dimensional materials;

(c)    demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, and evidence of effective classroom teaching; and

(d)    be highly proficient in written and spoken English.

Conditions of Service
